Frozen Fun Update from the Disneyland Resort

By Robert Niles: The soft-open roll-out of the new Frozen-themed activities at the Disneyland Resort might be going a bit more slowly than perhaps first expected, but several changes are in place already in Anaheim.

First, Disney has added a new Arendelle scene to Storybook Land, best viewed from the canal boats. It's the first change to Storybook Land since Aladdin's Agrabah joined the line-up in the 1990s.

Anna and Elsa have moved from their previous meet and greet location in Disneyland's Fantasyland over to the Animation building in Disney California Adventure. Fastpass reservations are still required for the meet and greet, and it's Anna or Elsa now, and no longer Anna and Elsa.

Also in the Animation building, the Animation Academy is now all Olaf, all the time. While it probably makes sense to go with the, uh, hottest (sorry!) character for the Christmas and New Year's holiday when the resort is attracting a higher-than-normal share of out-of-town guests who will visit this drawing class only once, at some point, not having additional character lessons during the day will hurt the repeat appeal of this attraction. Cast members say that the all-Olaf curriculum is temporary, but couldn't say how temporary.

If you're not happy with just drawing Olaf, you can meet him outside the old "Millionaire" theater, which is being converted to an indoor snow play area. Fastpasses are a must for this meet and greet, which will move inside once the play area is ready. (Maybe later this week?)

The Frozen sing-along is slated to soft-open next week in the old Muppets 3D theater, though cast members are saying that an opening this week might be possible. Finally, Frozen has taken over the old Mad T Party dance party in the evenings. Disney has made only minimal decorate changes to the event, leaving the stages and canopy intact from the Mad T Party. The dance mix, at least from the initial DJs working the event, seems to be fairly family-friendly but they are sticking to dance mixes rather than playing non-stop music from the movie. So if you are looking for an endless loop of "Let It Go," best to wait for the sing-along show.

A new Frozen stage show also will replace the Tangled and Beauty and the Beast shows in the Fantasy Faire Royal Theatre in Disneyland on January 7, the date that all of these new Frozen-themed events open officially.
